To synchronize Tracks and Playlists to an iPod or other portable device, you'll want to first configure the device and synchronization options, as described below:
Synchronization functionality is enabled via the use of Device Plugins--one Plug-in per device. In most cases, your device is automatically recognized by MediaMonkey as soon as it is plugged in and there is no need to manually choose a device plug-in. As soon as it is recognized, you'll be given the option to Synchronize it, and first-time synchronization will pop up the Device Profile configuration dialog.
If the device has been recognized, but you wish to reconfigure it, simply plug in the device and click the arrow next to the 'Synchronize' button, and click Options. It will bring you to the Device Profile configuration dialog.
If the device isn't automatically recognized by MediaMonkey, it can be configured via Tools > Options > Portable/Audio Devices. Select the most appropriate plug-in and press Configure, to get to the Device Profile configuration dialog.
Plug-in | Description |
iPod | This plug-in is used for the iPod, iPod Shuffle, iPod mini,
iPod Nano, iPod Video, including 5th generation iPods. It synchs
MP3 files and related properties including lyrics, Album Art, ratings,
volume leveling information, play history, as well as Playlists.
It also supports bookmarking for tracks that have a Genre of 'Podcast'
or 'Audiobook'. It does not support aac files, though auto-conversion can convert such files if a suitable input plugin has been installed. |
WMDM | This plug-in is suitable for most other devices, and is designed especially for 'MTP' devices that are labelled 'Plays for Sure'. This plug-in does not support Synchronization of WMA files protected by DRM 10. It synchronizes whatever audio formats are supported by the device along with related properties including Album Art, ratings, play history, and Playlists (assuming they are supported by the device). |
Generic/Portable Device | This USB Mass Storage device plug-in is suitable for any device that appears as a drive letter in Windows Explorer. Although the WMDM driver can often be used with such devices, the generic plug-in is advantageous from a performance perspective for such devices. The generic plugin will synchronize Tracks with all their properties, along with Playlists, however, it will not explicity sync Album Art that isn't saved to a tag, or play history. |
iRiver H-series | This plug-in supports the H-120 and H-320 devices by iRiver. These devices are USB Mass Storage devices that could be used with the generic plug-in, however, this plug-in adds support for the iRiver database so that the database is always up to date. |
If multiple devices are used, then multiple plugins can be configured--one for each device.
If you are repeatedly prompted to configure a device that you do not wish to synchronize, simply uncheck the device.
